Executive Summary
This white paper reviews the status of organic waste reduction strategies for United States hospitals, including Department of Veteran Affairs facilities, and evaluates these strategies in light of increasing public and governmental interest in environmentally appropriate technologies. After a discussion of basic concepts, this paper uses data from recent studies and field trials to compare leading methods of dealing with organic food waste. Similar issues and results are relevant for other healthcare facilities and retirement communities.
